Ammonites belong to the phylum Mollusca in a class known as cephalopods - creatures with "heads and feet" like octopuses and squids. They swam the ancient oceans for 400 million years, until they went extinct, along with the dinosaurs, 65 million years ago.
Ammonites were free-floating invertebrates that were attacked by plesiosaurs and mosasaurs, two groups of giant marine reptiles. One way ammonites were able to avoid attack was by rapidly changing their buoyancy levels, zigzagging and sinking quickly.
These amazing prehistoric animals ranged in size from tiny species just a few centimetres in diameter to the monstrous Cretaceous ammonite, Parapuzosia seppenradensis, which reached nearly 3 metres in length and may have weighed nearly 1,500 kilograms!
